Doughnut fans rejoice as Krispy Kreme announces it is giving away one free original glazed doughnut at selected locations.

That means one doughnut per person, not one doughnut to share between anyone who turns up. The North Carolina-based chain will help doughnut fans get their fix for free on Friday, writes Antony Venutolo for NJ.com.

Krispy Kreme has a long, storied history in doughnuts

The company is celebrating a good year. The chain began in 1937 after founder Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast doughnut recipe from a French chef based in New Orleans. Before long Rudolph was selling doughnuts in Old Salem, Winston-Salem, North Carolina to local grocery stores.

Sixty years later in 1997 Krispy Kreme donated historical artifacts to the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History. In 2001 the company opened its first international store just outside Toronto, Canada.

There are 12,000 Krispy Kreme stockists across the United States, so you are probably never too far from one of the historic doughnuts. There are also 1,000 retail shops in 25 countries around the world. Selected locations include Sydney, Australia; London, England; Asia, Mexico and the Middle East.

Ethical company lauded by activists

In 2011 the company branched out into coffee with the launch of Krispy Kreme Signature Coffee Blends. Activists have lauded the company for its environmentally-conscious policies, which include only buying palm oil from companies that do not destroy rainforests.

The company’s doughnuts also only contain eggs from non-caged hens. If you are in New Jersey you can get your free doughnut from Krispy Kreme Collingwood, while those in New York should head to Penn Station for their sweet treat.

They say that nothing in life comes for free but this time around it looks like this doughnut might. That is assuming that they haven’t all been snapped up by the time you get there, as supplies are limited.

It’s time to get outside and get searching for your free Krispy Kreme doughnut. What better way to start your weekend than with a delicious sweet treat. The company is probably hoping that you will stick around and buy some more of its large range of doughnuts, and perhaps some coffee too, but there is no obligation to make a purchase.
