Right on schedule, Apple has released iOS 11 beta 5. They typically follow a two week release schedule for their beta updates as they get closer to the full public release of a new iOS version. While this iOS beta is meant for developers, there is a way to install iOS 11 beta 5 without having a developer account. This is a very good solution for those of you who absolutely cannot fathom being out of date for even a moment. Before I get into the details about how to install iOS 11 beta 5, please take a moment to back up your device. If anything goes wrong then it’s nice to have an up-to-date backup. Of course, errors during iOS updates are rare but better safe than sorry.

Okay, now that my little disclaimer is out of the way, here’s how to install iOS 11 beta 5 on your compatible device. Note that this is the same as previous steps we have outlined for earlier versions so if you have already installed the beta profile then you may be able to get the new beta OTA by checking your settings. If you haven’t done that, here’s what to do:

  1. Open Safari on your iOS device and go to this link.
  2. Tap “iOS 11 (beta 5)” if your browser does not automatically redirect you.
  3. Tap “Install” when prompted. You may be asked several times. Just keep pressing “Install.”
  4. You will then be asked to reboot your device.
  5. After rebooting, go to the “Settings” app, then tap “General” and then tap “Software Update.” You should see iOS 11 developer beta as a download option. Download and install iOS 11 beta 5 just like any other iOS update.
  6. Enjoy!

Note: if you don’t immediately see the download option after rebooting, wait a few minutes. If you still don’t see it, try rebooting one more time. Sometimes it can take a but before your device is recognized as requiring the OTA update. Other than that, it should be smooth sailing if you want to install iOS 11 beta 5.

Now that we are so close to the full public release of iOS 11, there shouldn’t be very much that has changed in the iOS 11 beta 5 release. There will be a few minor bug fixes here and there but most people agree that the iOS 11 beta builds have been very stable. Still, if you use your iOS device as your daily driver and you won’t be able to handle any errors or bugs, I would recommend against installing the iOS 11 beta. While it’s unlikely you would run into any serious problems; you’re better safe than sorry.

Of course, if you’re concerned about bugs and you plan on waiting it out until the full public release, you shouldn’t have to wait much longer. iOS 11 will likely drop publicly around the announcement of the new iPhone 8 which looks to be sometime in September. Hold tight!
