GoPro: Monkey Takes Selfie As Friend Goes Nuts On Tourist’s Head

The cheeky monkey grabbed a GoPro from a British tourist before snapping a series of selfies.

British tourist Lizzy Ware was feeding the primate in Ubud, Bali, when it snatched her camera. 23-year-old Lizzy was left amazed as the monkey made off with the GoPro, taking a number of pictures as a companion leaped on top of Lizzy’s head.

Macaques go wild for GoPro selfies

The two long-tailed macaques went crazy for the camera, with the original perpetrator licking the lens and posing as it snapped selfie after selfie. Lizzy and her partner Ben Holmes remained calm throughout the impromptu photo shoot, and even managed to flip the camera so that the monkey could get a better shot.

“It seemed the monkeys wanted to get the perfect picture,” Lizzy said. “It was pretty exciting having the little guy interested in the camera and made for some great footage and a selfie.”

Things soon became even stranger, when the second monkey decided to get up close and personal with Lizzy. “Then I felt a tug on my dress and something pull my hair. I quickly twisted the GoPro around and found a second on top of my head,” she said.

Despite the amusement, the monkeys can cross the boundary from play into violence. “I wasn’t too sure what he thought he was going to find up there, until he found my ear and I thought he was going to pull my earring out. Unfortunately they can turn pretty angry rather quickly – so the clinging turned into a playful bite and I was scared he was going to rip my dress,” Lizzy continued.

Lizzy and Ben were on a trip to the Balinese forest in order to visit the sacred temples of Ubud, famous for their monkey populations. The pair visited Ubud on their 6-month trip which took in South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, before heading home last month.

“In the forest you can get bananas for around 50p,” said Lizzy. “Once you’re handed a bunch you’ve got monkeys hurling themselves up your body and grabbing them. But this was definitely the selfie of the trip,”she added.
