Employment services and research firm Glassdoor’s Employees’ Choice Awards 2015 were released earlier this week. The seventh annual Employees’ Choice Awards honors the 50 Best Places to Work across the U.S. and the UK as determined by their own employees.
Somewhat surprisingly, although Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) sat atop the list, tech companies did not dominate the 2015 Best Places to Work List, with firms from from nearly all sectors making the list.
Glassdoor’s Top 10 Best Places to Work in 2015
- Google — A program manager of the search giant offers a very positive review. “The benefits and care of employees is obviously world class, and compensation is almost unmatchable. But the company attracts some of the best talent and best people to work with in the world, which is the most important bit. Potential impact is always huge, and it’s great to wake up in the morning and hear that the company you work for is going to try and defeat death, or bring internet in balloons to rural areas.
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) has gotten really large, and depending on where you are in the company, some bureaucracy and politics can get in the way. The company is very conscious of it, though, so it’s less than you might see at other companies of this size.”
- Bain & Company — A senior consultant at Bain obviously likes his job. “Incredible culture – people work really hard, but they enjoy doing it; Incredible people – mix of intelligence but also humility that you don’t find at the other top consulting firms; Amazing exit opportunities – the Bain network is not only big, it’s incredibly strong. Ex-Bainies will almost always help out another Bainie without fail. This is truly a remarkable place.
Work life balance [is a con] — hours can get rough, and often lots of travel.”
- Nestle Purina PetCare — An engineer for this pet care conglomerate notes that “The corporate culture is second to none. Strong midwestern roots, stability and friendly environment; coupled with the vast opportunities that come with an international giant parent company. There is a tremendous amount of mutual trust and respect for others within NPPC.
As others have noted, people are unlikely to leave the Company. This can limit upward mobility for some.”
- F5 Networks — A software engineer highlights teamwork as a positive at F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV). “F5 bases its success in team work, even with “competitor” companies. That is also reflected in the employee level. I have never had so much confidence on knowing that I can trust my teammates and other experienced people from other teams. You will always get help from others.
The company is growing really fast and sometimes you get the feel the company is not ready for it.”
- Boston Consulting — A consultant with Boston Consulting Group is enthused about her job. “High impact projects: in some cases, truly world-altering topics (more for public sector but true throughout). Excellent compensation and perks. Outstanding colleagues; best and the brightest from all fields / backgrounds (think Rhodes scholars) create a really rich intellectual atmosphere
Work-life balance can be challenging with the travel, as with all top firms.”
- Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) — A procurement specialist with the oil major says “Great benefits, work-life balance. A very structured organization with focus on teamwork and safety of its employees.
Due to the size of the company, promotions are difficult unless you travel overseas.”
- HEB — A warehouse receiver in Houston notes that HEB really cares about its employees. “Great pay. Great benefits. Ability to move up. One of the few companies that actually cares about it’s employees.
Like any retail job, your schedule varies depending on business and season. If you don’t like customer service, this is not the job for you.”
- In-n-Out Burger — A Level III associate at In-n-Our Burger says “Great pay rates, fantastic hours, calm and comfortable atmosphere, plenty of benefits, full of opportunity friendly coworkers, overall very happy with the experience I gain here.
Dress code is VERY strict. Perfection is expected and mediocrity is not tolerated. Fast-paced, which can get very difficult.”
- McKinsey & Company — An engagement manager at McKinsey and Co. says the company will help you move your career forward. “No other organization places as much emphasis on professional development; really amazing set of people – caring, challenging and whip smart.
Your experience is highly dependent on which projects / client teams you join – which is largely within your control but not always.”
- Mayo Clinic — The only complaint this Rochester-based research associate at the Mayo Clinic had about her job was the parking. “Mayo Clinic has an extremely professional work environment with state-of-the art facilities. Collaboration within and between departments is encouraged. Mayo also has an excellent work culture and business integrity.
Parking close to your building is limited.”
