Apple is set to unveil a 4-inch iPhone SE at its March 21 event. Samsung is planning to give the new iPhone some tough competition. Latest rumors suggest that the Korean company is working to launch a Galaxy S7 Mini to rival the iPhone SE. Samsung had launched the mini versions of Galaxy S3, S4, and S5, but skipped the S6 Mini. Taiwanese publication Apple Daily reports that the upcoming Galaxy S7 Mini will go up against the iPhone SE.

Galaxy S7 Mini to be as powerful as S7 and S7 Edge

Samsung’s mini device will be slightly larger than the iPhone SE, but will be well stacked in terms of hardware. The publication says the Galaxy S7 Mini will feature a 4.6-inch HD screen with a 720×1280 pixels resolution. It is said to have the same processor – either Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 – as the bigger S7 and S7 Edge. That is a departure from the previous years’ of mini handsets that were underpowered compared to their standard siblings.

The report adds that the Galaxy S7 Mini will be 9.9mm thick. The phone will likely come with 3GB RAM, 12-megapixel main camera, and a separate accessory called Periscope Lens with 3x optical zoom. The device does not have a launch date yet, neither has Samsung said anything about its existence. Remember, last year there were also rumors about Galaxy S6 Mini that never arrived.

iPhone SE expected to sell well in emerging markets

The 4-inch iPhone SE is aimed at emerging markets like India. Leaks and rumors suggest that it will be similar to the iPhone 5S in terms of design, but will pack powerful innards. The phone is said to be powered by A9 SoC with M9 co-processor. It will feature Live Photos support and NFC for Apple Pay. The iPhone SE would sport a 12-megapixel main camera, and will be available in 16GB and 64GB internal storage variants.

Samsung’s product mix is shifting to high-powered mid-priced smartphones, and the Galaxy S7 Mini would fit into that category.
