Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) added large file sharing capability within groups on its website by integrating Dropbox’s cloud-based storage system, according to a report from TechCrunch.
The report cited a blog written by Chris Varenhost on Dropbox Blog. The blog post reads, “Today we’re psyched to announce that you can share stuff from Dropbox right inside Facebook Groups! Now you can share notes with your study group, add the latest game schedule to your basketball team’s group, or post a birthday video to your family’s group at lightning speed from wherever you are — just as long as you have them saved in Dropbox.”
In addition, Varenhost explained that people will be able to like or post a comment on everything a user share within the group through the Dropbox. The members of the group will automatically see the any changes made by the user to the file shared within the group. This means, collaboration and sharing a large file is easier and faster using the Dropbox technology.
Furthermore, he added, “Once you choose to link Facebook to your Dropbox account, you’ll be able to search through your Dropbox and select what you’d like to share. Docs, photos, and videos shared from Dropbox will show up on the group’s wall and can also be viewed on a smartphone or tablet.”
Based on the blog post, the social networking giant provided users the ability to upload and share large files stored in their Dropbox with the members of their groups. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) did not change the existing feature of the website in uploading files from the computer.
Sharing large files is easier, faster and safer. It will no longer require users to post a link to share large files on their Dropbox.
Technology bloggers noted that Facebook’s move to integrate Dropbox on its platform is a strategic move. Both companies will benefit in the partnership. More users will become aware of the Dropbox cloud-base storage system, which would drive its growth.
On the other hand, Dropbox provided additional value to Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s core mission as the leading social networking platform.
According to TechCrunch, there is a possibility that the partnership was initiated by Aditya Agarwal, the former director of Engineering at Facebook, who is currently serving as vice president of engineering at Dropbox. The report also suggested the social networking giant has no plans integrating other cloud-storage services in its website.
