Is there a company or organization that can provide an internet connection faster than the Google Fiber offered by search engine giant, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL). The answer is yes; it is Energy Science Network or ESnet.

ESnet is a 100 Gbps infrastructure

ESnet is a private network that provides high-bandwidth and reliable connection that links scientist at national laboratories, universities and other research institutions. It has the capability to transfer data from one location in the United States to another part at a speed of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps)— the fastest speed in transferring data recorded to date.

The speed of Google Fiber from Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is already fast at 10 gigabits per second, which is already 100 times faster than the average broadband speeds today.

ESnet’s speed is incomparably faster— 1,000 times faster, but scientists particularly those working as the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) still consider such speed slow.

ESnet is funded by DOE

The Department of Energy Office of Science provides funding for ESnet. It is managed and operated by the ESnet team at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Scientists use ESnet to access to the agency’s unique research-facilities and computing resources. They use the network to collaborate with their fellow scientists regarding the world’s most important scientific challenges such as energy, climate and origins of the universe.

The ESnet is very important to the international scientific community because their projects such as the Large Hadron Collider or mapping of the human genome involve collaboration and sharing of large volume of data.

ESnet offers efficient and scalable infrastructure

Scientists manage to improve their work and conduct ambitious, world-class research because ESnet provides an efficient and scalable infrastructure. Instead of sending hard disks through mail, they can securely transmit data through the network at a very high-speed.

According to ESnet Director Gregory Bell, “Our vision of the world refers to the fact that scientific knowledge should not be limited by geography.”

The ESnet team has a strong spirit of leadership in networking innovation, and are “constantly improving the network and services to create a more versatile and robust network to serve the emerging needs of scientific researchers.”
