Apple iOS 9.3 Jailbreak: Should Jailbreakers Update?

Updated on

An online debate has broken out over the merits of upgrading to iOS 9.3 for jailbreakers.

Although iOS 9.2.1 has some security issues, they could be beneficial for jailbreakers who are waiting for a future jailbreak release. Normal Apple users will be pleased to hear that iOS 9.3 patches some significant security issues, but they could be exploited by jailbreakers.

Jailbreakers should wait before upgrading to iOS 9.3

If you really want to jailbreak your phone you might be better off waiting. The next jailbreak might not work with the newer iOS 9.3. If you decide to wait make sure that you don’t download any unknown or malicious enterprise certificate installs.

Avoid connecting to unprotected public WiFi connections. Follow these two pieces of advice and your device should still be safe running iOS 9.2 or iOS 9.2.1.

If your device is jailbroken on iOS 9.1 or below, remain on the same firmware and follow that same advice. If you are on older firmwares and are not worried about jailbreaking, it’s a good idea to upgrade to iOS 9.3.

No news on next jailbreak release

The latest version of Apple’s operating system offers a raft of security improvements, loads of new features and performance improvements. There is as yet no word on an iOS 9.2.1/9.3 jailbreak.

Italian developer Luca Tedesco has shown off a jailbreak on iOS 9.3 beta 1, but he is not going to release it publicly. The team at Pangu are currently working on an Apple TV 4 jailbreak which will reportedly be released soon.

Keep your eyes peeled for further news on the progress being made with the iOS 9.3 jailbreak. If you have already updated to iOS 9.3 you can still downgrade to iOS 9.2.1. You will have to do so quickly though before Apple closes its signing window.

Other issues have arisen with iOS 9.3, especially for users of older iPads. Online forums are full of people complaining that the new operating system “bricked” their devices, and Apple is under pressure to come up with a solution.

The last time there were problems with an iOS update was with iOS 8. The system gained a reputation for being unstable and Apple was forced to release a series of patches to shore it up.
