Siri Saves Man’s Life After He Gets Stuck Under Truck

Updated on

Apple’s digital assistant Siri meant that the man was able to call emergency services even though he was trapped under a truck.

Many people get frustrated with Siri’s misinterpretation of words and general lack of accuracy, but Apple’s digital assistant came into its own when 18-year-old Sam Ray got stuck under a truck. Ray was carrying out repairs when a jack collapsed, trapping him underneath the 5,000 pound vehicle, according to Forbes.

Ray screamed for help but no one could hear him. His isolated location meant that it was unlikely that other vehicles would pass and come to his rescue, so Ray began to struggle to free himself.

As he writhed around underneath the truck, he somehow hit the home button on his iPhone, activating Siri. As he realized what he had done, he repeatedly told the digital assistant to call 911.

After several failed attempts, Ray thought that Siri had let him down once again. But then he suddenly heard a voice on the line, as Rutherford County dispatcher Christina Lee answered his call. At first she thought it was a pocket call, but quickly realized Ray was in genuine need of assistance.

Lee used the phone signal to locate Ray, but he had to scream into the phone in order for her to pinpoint his exact location. Soon afterwards, volunteer firefighters attended the scene and pulled Ray from underneath the vehicle.

He was then taken to hospital, where doctors found that he had suffered a bruised kidney, concussion, broken ribs and burns on one arm after being trapped under the vehicle for 40 minutes.

According to the chief of trauma and surgical care at Vanderbilt University, Ray was lucky not to have died. Such injuries can be fatal. For his part, Ray stated that he was glad to be alive, and feels as though he will use an iPhone for the rest of his life.

“I guess I’m stuck with an iPhone for the rest of my life,” he said. “I owe them that.”
