Windows 10 Crash Bug Fixed A Day Before Launch

Updated on

Microsoft’s Windows 10 is less than 24 hours away from the official rollout. However, the KB3074681 update pushed out on Saturday to the current and final build of Windows 10 carried a bug that caused crashes for some users. Users who tried uninstalling an application using Control Panel instead of the Settings screen reported that it crashed Control Panel and returned to the Windows 10 desktop.

Windows 10 to be rolled out in a phased manner

Microsoft scrambled to roll out another update dubbed KB3074683 to fix the bug on Monday. The new update lets users uninstall programs via Control Panel, though they can also do it through the Windows 10 Settings screen. Build 10240 is the final version of Windows 10 that will be pushed out to members of the Windows Insider Program on Wednesday.

The Redmond-based software giant is planning to roll out Windows 10 in a phased manner, initially making it available to Insiders. And then it will be pushed out to genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 users who have reserved the free upgrade. The phased rollout will give Microsoft time to catch and fix any bugs, reports Lance Whitney of CNET.

Microsoft starts pre-loading eligible PCs with Windows 10

Windows 10 will become available at 12:00 AM ET on July 29th. Microsoft has already started pre-loading the final build of Windows 10 on PCs eligible for the upgrade. If you have registered for the upgrade, go to the C folder on your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC and you can find full installer files named “$windows.~BT”. However, the new OS for mobile will arrive later this year.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella aims to have at least one billion devices running Windows 10 within three years. Windows 10 launch will be accompanied by a massive marketing campaign across the globe. Besides PCs and tablets, the new OS runs smartphones, gaming consoles, and holographic headsets. It would bring virtual assistant Cortana, and Edge browser that is 112% faster than Google Chrome.

Microsoft shares fell 0.31% to $45.21 at 11:25 AM EDT on Tuesday.
