It has been over ten thousand years since humans began to reside in large communities and the metropolis was born. Mega cities such as New York, Dubai and Tokyo have fast become the centre of the revolution of the smart city; where technology and humans live together in harmony.
The number of smart cities around the world is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years and by 2050, 70% of the world’s population will be living in smart cities. But, just how long will it be until the world’s cities are filled with extraordinary and innovative technology?

What should we expect?
One of the worst parts of the long winter months is travelling through gloomy weather, only to arrive home and realise you never switched your heating on. The piece uncovers in that just two years time 43% of people will live in homes and work in offices with smart heating systems, such as a smart thermostat, in them. Their homes and workplaces are expected to be connected to the internet, too. With the introduction of a smart thermostat into your home you’ll be able to turn the heating up in time for your arrival directly from the palm of your hand as your smartphone syncs with the device – no more waiting for the house to warm up!
Not long after 2020, the next big thing to hit smart city transport will take place as Uber trial a flying on-demand taxi service in Dallas and Dubai. Just three years later in 2023 Uber plan to be transporting passengers on the flying service. Still not impressed? In 2050, when current 25 years olds hit the age of 58, they’ll be living and working within smart buildings that are able to adjust to the needs of their inhabitants, including responding to temperature variations in the weather outside.
Traffic jams getting you down? Or, does the lunchtime rush fill you with dread? Don’t fret as other lifestyle changes will come in 2050. Smart city dwellers will find travelling a breeze as they get from A to B in a flying taxi, and as for lunch, takeaway drones are on hand to deliver your grub straight to the office.
The graphic fast forwards us into the smart city of the future to as far as 2060, when present day 25 year olds are now 68, where cargo is now transported via hyperloop to far-flung corners of the globe. Clever containers will know their contents and their destinations as they travel around the world’s hyperloop system, ensuring they are delivered to the correct place undamaged. Plus, in the same year, robo butlers will be on hand to assist you during your hotel stays, holidays and business trips – classy!
