Korean giant Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) launched its new Milk Video service on Wednesday. Milk Video is a new discovery-centric social video app for Galaxy device owners.

Samsung Milk Video

Basically an add-on to the firm’s popular Internet radio service Milk Music, Milk Video is being pitched as a method for Samsung’s users to easily find new videos, allowing users to get more value from large screen devices, explains Samsung’s vice president of content and services Kevin Swint.

Like Milk Music, Milk Video is free, but is exclusively available to owners of a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Samsung’s tablet users can’t get Milk either, and to date the firm has refused to comment whether the app would eventually roll out to other Android or iOS users.

Statement from Samsung VP

“[Music] Discovery happens in very haphazard and random way,” Swint explained in an interview. “This experience leaves a lot of people feeling like they’re always the last one to see the video that everybody is talking about. We thought we could solve that.”

Milk Video offers curated selections

The videos for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s new app are curated by a team who searches for popular and viral videos within broad categories such as entertainment and sports. Videos are selected from a variety of sources, including YouTube, and firms such asVice, Buzzfeed, College Humor and Funny or Die have been contracted to provide content for the app. A couple of these firms, like Funny or Die and Red Bull Studios, will produce some videos exclusively for Milk Video.

The Korean titan is hoping these partnerships, along with the curated approach, will allow Milk Video to stand out from other video platforms. One major plus is that there are no ads within the app or its videos.

Milk Video focuses on sharing, and users can follow each other to see what videos are trending among friends. At this point, it only supports Facebook login, but Samsung says you will be able to log in with an existing Samsung account very soon.
