Almost every tech enthusiast on the Internet seems to be talking about a revolutionary graphics processor that Samsung is developing for its future devices. The rumor mill claims it could be used in the next year’s Galaxy S10 flagship. The innovative design of the new Samsung GPU allows it to be used in smartphones, computers, and a variety of other devices.
The new Samsung GPU could give Apple a run for the money
Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Research was recently briefed on Samsung’s new GPU. Peddie noted that the GPU was able to deliver incredible performance per watt in simulations. The graphics processor’s unique architecture allows it to bundle multiple instructions into a group and execute them in a single cycle, reports EETimes. Peddie added that it would be the first time a new GPU design has emerged in more than ten years.
If and when the new Samsung GPU makes it to smartphones, we can expect it to offer insane levels of graphics performance to enhance display resolution, gaming experience, 3D rendering, and virtual reality experience. The proprietary GPU could give Samsung an edge over its arch-rival Apple, which is making its own GPU chips that could debut in iPhones this year or the next.
Peddie said its design was so good that it could be deployed “in every platform.” The new Samsung GPU is expected to be used in the Exynos processor first. Samsung hasn’t yet decided whether to license the technology to other vendors.
Galaxy S10 unlikely to get the new GPU. So which device will?
The next-gen Exynos 9820 chipset is expected to debut with the Galaxy S10 in early 2019, but there is no guarantee the Galaxy S10 will get the new GPU.
In fact, the reliable Chinese tipster Ice Universe said in a Weibo post that the Exynos 9820 would include ARM’s Mali-G76 MP18 GPU rather than the new Samsung GPU. The Mali-G76 itself is a powerful GPU built using the 7nm manufacturing process. The current Exynos 9810 chipset uses the Mali-G72.
So, which smartphone will be the first to get the new Samsung GPU? We can’t predict the future, but we expect it to be Samsung’s upcoming gaming smartphone. Earlier this week, Chinese tipster @MMDDJ_ said Samsung was preparing to launch a gaming smartphone next year. It makes a lot of sense to add the new GPU in a graphics-intensive smartphone.

Gaming smartphones are increasingly becoming a new buzz in the town. Companies like Razer and Asus have demonstrated phones focused on video gamers. Samsung would want to grab a piece of that pie, especially considering it has everything in place to make a great gaming phone. The new Samsung GPU will ensure awesome 3D graphics and smooth frame rates in games. It could also be used in augmented reality and virtual reality.
Before the gaming smartphone, Samsung will release Galaxy Note 9 phablet at an event in New York City on August 9th. The Note 9 will feature a dual camera, a rear fingerprint sensor, and an upgraded S Pen stylus with Bluetooth support and a built-in battery. It will also bring an upgraded Bixby 2.0 AI assistant that facilitates better natural-language processing and faster response times.
Early next year, the Korean company will unveil Galaxy S10 in three different sizes at the Mobile World Congress. The S10 would have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the display. The device is also rumored to ditch the iris scanner to adopt an advanced 3D facial recognition similar to the iPhone X’s Face ID. The Galaxy S10 (or at least the largest version) would sport a triple camera system on the back to enhance the photography experience.
Samsung is also preparing to launch a foldable smartphone in the first half of 2019. It is unclear whether the foldable smartphone is the gaming phone that tipster @MMDDJ_ was referring to. The Wall Street Journal reported recently that Samsung will target niche audiences such as mobile gamers with its foldable smartphone. The mainstream buyers will not be able to afford it because it will cost nearly $1,850.
