The console version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) has so far been exclusive to the Xbox. Though the iOS and Android versions of the game were released earlier this year, PUBG for PS4 has yet to get a release date. However, if the latest hint is anything to go by, then PUBG for PS4 is on the way.

No release date yet for PUBG for PS4

Recently, the title “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds PS4″ was spotted on the Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee’s website. The Korean agency rates games based on their age appropriateness. The game is classified as “not for youth,” which is in line with the game’s rating in the West.

The Korean listing reveals no details about the release date for the game on Sony’s console, but it does suggest that PUBG for PS4 will be released soon. The listing also suggests that Bluehole’s exclusivity deal with Microsoft has either ended or will end soon.

Previously, there were reports that Microsoft was in talks with Bluehole about extending the exclusivity period. Since the terms of the exclusivity deal between Microsoft and Bluehole were never made public, it is hard to tell if the PUBG developer extended the exclusivity period. PUBG is developed and published by PUBG Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the South Korean video game maker Bluehole.

Bluehole itself previously hinted at a PS4 release when it talked about its plans to launch the game on every platform.

“As it’s going to be an exclusive title on Xbox One for some time, we’d like to focus on completing the Xbox One PUBG for now,” PUBG Corporation CEO Chang Han Kim, told InvenGlobal. “If we have the opportunity, the final goal would be to launch the title on every platform.”

This was not the first time a PUBG executive hinted at a PS4 release. It’s also been reported that Sony and Bluehole were in talks about a PUBG port. This suggests the two companies were working in the background on porting the game so that they are ready with PUBG for PS4 when the Microsoft deal ends.

Why was PUBG exclusive to Xbox?

One big reason PUBG was exclusive to the Xbox One was Microsoft’s Game Preview program. As you probably know, PUBG is still very much a work-in-progress. The game debuted on Steam via its Early Access program before officially launching in December following the PC 1.0 Update.

When PUBG originally launched on the Xbox One, it was still unfinished, and thus, it was made available via Microsoft’s Game Preview service. The Xbox is the only console with such a service, which allows gamers to test the quality and performance of a game before its launch. Since PlayStation and Nintendo do not offer a similar service, it was only logical to go with the Xbox until the game is fully developed, which it is now.

PUBG came out of the Xbox One Game Preview earlier this month. Microsoft even launched a limited edition PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Xbox One Wireless controller to mark the occasion. The controller is now available for pre-order and will be released on Oct. 30.

How will PUBG perform on the PS4?

PUBG is a free-to-play battle royale game. It was initially released in March 2017 for the PC, and then it landed on Xbox in December. In March 2018, the iOS and Android versions of the game were released. PUBG has been a huge hit even though it has been available for only about a year or so.

PUBG has more than 100 million downloads on mobile, while more than  50 million copies of the PC and Xbox versions of the game have been sold. Overall, the game boasts 400 million registered players and 87 million daily players. It will be interesting to see how the game will perform on the PS4, considering that PUBG has been losing PC players to games like Fortnite.

However, Bluehole is still very committed to the game and is working on major changes to address the longstanding technical issues. Just last month, the developer announced the Fix PUBG campaign. The aim of the campaign is to make the game “better, more stable, and fairer.”

The Xbox version of the game never had the same features as the PC version. Additionally, the experience of playing the game with a controller has never been smooth. Hopefully the PS4 version will overcome these limitations, making the game a natural fit with a controller.

As of now, there have been no comments from Sony, Microsoft or PUBG’s developer about the latest development, nor is there any information on the PUBG for PS4 release date.
