Samsung has been working on an iris scanner for years. The Korean company seems to have perfected the technology and is ready to introduce it with the upcoming Galaxy Note 6. According to Dutch publication Galaxy Club, Samsung has filed trademark applications for “Samsung Iris” and “Samsung Eyeprint” in Europe. It serves as further proof that the iris scanner may debut with the Galaxy Note 6.

Iris scanner more secure than fingerprint scanners

The latest report comes more than a month after Samsung imported 200 units of the “Iris Cam” to India for testing purposes. According to the Indian export-import tracking website Zauba, the Iris Cam was listed as “parts for Samsung mobile.” Fingerprint scanners have increasingly become common among mid- and high-end smartphones. Though fingerprint scanners are highly secure, security experts believe that iris scanners are even better.

Samsung Galaxy Note 6

Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and 950 XL already come with the iris recognition technology. Samsung’s next-gen Galaxy Note 6 is rumored to feature a 5.8-inch Quad HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 823 processor, 12MP main camera with Dual Pixel setup, a microSD card slot, and 32GB of built-in storage. The device is said to be powered by a huge 4,200mAh battery.

Galaxy Note 6 to pack 6GB RAM

Last week, Samsung unveiled a 6GB LPDDR4 RAM module at its Mobile Solutions Forum in China. The chip is built using 10nm process technology, making it faster and more energy efficient compared to those made on 20nm process. It has fueled speculations that the Note 6 may feature the 10nm 6GB RAM that will help improve the phone’s battery life and processing speed.

Samsung is said to be testing two versions of the Galaxy Note 6, one with the standard display and another with a dual-edge screen. According to SamMobile, only one of them will enter production. The Korean company will also launch a Galaxy Note 6 Lite in some markets for price-conscious consumers. The device is expected to go on sale in the United States in the week of August 15, about a month ahead of the iPhone 7 launch.
