Pokemon Go has once again claimed the top-grossing spot on the iPhone in the U.S., according to data from App Annie and Sensor Tower. The location-based mobile game has destroyed records for the fastest app to 500 million installs since its debut in July. On September 29, the app fell to number four on list of the highest-grossing iPhone games in the U.S., but now it’s back at the top, reports VentureBeat.
No specific reason
Pokemon Go has overthrown city-building combat apps Game of War, Clash Royale and Mobile Strike to claim the number one spot again. Niantic has not released any major updates, so it is hard to see any reason why the mobile game is soaring back to the top, other than the continuous spending done by players, says VentureBeat.
The game is making more money than any other iPhone app in 15 other countries as well, including the United Kingdom and Canada and emerging markets like the Philippines. Despite losing millions of players recently, the mobile game is still bringing in a lot of revenue, according to a new report. The mobile game is continuing to bring in around $2 million daily, reports Newzoo. As per the report, the game was pulling $16 million in revenue daily when it launched in July.
Peter Warman, CEO of Newzoo, said, “Pokemon Go has opened our eyes in many ways. It has refreshed the top-grossing mobile game ranking that has been dominated by a small number of publishers and games for a long time.”
The game sees around 700,000 new downloads daily. Overall, the game has reached $470 million revenue and 550 million installs, says Newzoo.
Some weak areas with Pokemon Go as well
Though Pokemon Go is getting players from other parts of the world to spend money, it is faltering in a few areas as well.
In Japan, the game is the fifth highest-grossing iPhone game, falling behind the adventure game Shadowverse, Monster Strike and Puzzle & Dragons, and the messaging app Line. Adventure games have dominated Japan’s mobile gaming sector since 2012. Also Pokemon Go does not top the Google Play Android App store in the U.S. It is positioned at number three behind Game of War and MZ’s Mobile Strike.
Niantic has still not released the game in South Korea and China because of complications over how Google’s service would work in those countries. China is the number one country for mobile spending, while South Korea is fourth. The Pokemon Company wants to get the mobile game into those countries as well, it told The Wall Street Journal.
