Tesla, the most buzz-worthy car manufacturer ever to exist clearly dominates social media and headlines.  But with EV adoption rates now hitting almost 8% in California, and 2% across the U.S., the trend is clearly upward for electric vehicles. But – outside of Tesla – how are the other electric cars stacking up in conversations?

Q2 hedge fund letters, conference, scoops etc

PartCatalog.com analyzed over 10,000 geotagged tweets to find out exactly which electric vehicles are dominating social media, outside of Tesla.  These geotagged tweets were taken over a 30-day period between June and July.

In terms of who “won”, the Nissan Leaf barely edged out the Audi E-Tron, with 17 states to 16.  To anyone that follows EVs this shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Here is the full breakdown:

  • Nissan Leaf – 17 states
  • Audi E-Tron – 16 states
  • BMW i3 – 6 states
  • Hyundai Kona – 5 states
  • Chevy Bolt – 3 states
  • Jaguar I-Pace – 3 states

Tesla generally dominates the EV conversation, especially on social media, so it’s interesting to see how things break down without that particular variable.

What’s also interesting is seeing a regional component, with the Leaf dominating in the West coast states like California, Oregon, Washington and even Hawaii, but it seems to have little interest in the East coast.

On the East coast, the Audi E-Tron seems to be a fan favorite, though the results are a bit more diverse.

Sitting firmly in last place, the Hyundai Kona, Chevy Bolt and Jaguar I-Pace barely made the map.

With dozens of new electric vehicle models coming out in the next few years – including pick up trucks, and possible electric versions of American muscle cars like the Mustang, it’ll be interesting to revisit this map to see how everyone stacks up.

It’s our guess that Tesla will still be dominating the conversation, especially if Elon Musk is able to keep his position as CEO.  Either way, fans of the electric car movement should be thrilled to see so much attention being given to electric vehicles.

It’s interesting to point out: during the data collection, PartCatalog noted that in this same time period Tesla had over 200,000 tweets attributed to their cars.  When Tesla does something newsworthy (which seems to be more often than not), the number of tweets can reach over a million.

What do you think?  Outside of Tesla, what’s your favorite EV?
