As expected, OnePlus has joined hands with French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (JCC) to launch a special edition of its flagship OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 5 Castelbajac edition will have the JCC moniker in its name and product description. The limited edition device will become available in Paris on September 22, and will be available across Europe on October 2nd.
OnePlus 5 Castelbajac edition to cost EUR 559
The OnePlus 5 Castelbajac edition is part of the company’s new “Callection.” The Chinese smartphone vendor and the French designer have also launched a number of accessories that reflect Castelbajac’s signature chromatic style. The accessories include T-shirts, caps, bags, and holsters. OnePlus will hold a pop-up event at the Colette gallery in Paris on September 22 to show off the new device and accessories.
The OnePlus 5 Castelbajac edition has a red volume button, a blue power button, and a yellow sound profile button. You’ll also see a mantra scribbled on the back. When you boot up the device, you will get ten wallpapers along with “a few other surprises.” OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei said the Chinese vendor is “always looking to try new things with partners who embody the Never Settle spirit.”
The Castelbajac edition will be sold only in Europe from Oct.2 via OnePlus.net. The device has been priced at EUR 559. People in other countries will be able to buy only the accessories such as T-shirts and bags. The accessories reflect the same carefree design with loud colors as the phone. Prices for the accessories range between $20 and $30 – neither too high nor too low.
The OnePlus 5 Castelbajac edition will be available with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The regular OnePlus 5 comes in two versions: One with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage and another with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The limited edition device has the same camera and the same Snapdragon 835 chipset as the regular model. On September 22, the company will hold a pop-up event at the Colette in Paris to show off its “Callection” products. The event will begin at 10 a.m. CEST.
OnePlus 5 features and specs
OnePlus 5 is a premium smartphone available at mid-range prices. The device offers a 5.5-inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It comes in slate gray, soft gold, and midnight black color options. It runs the same Snapdragon 835 processor that is used in other premium phones such as the Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, and Galaxy S8.
OnePlus 5 runs OxygenOS based on Android Nougat, and offers dual SIM support. It includes a USB-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button for security, and a non-removable 3,300mAh battery with Dash Charge technology. I have been using OnePlus 5 for about a month. The battery lasts more than a day of normal usage.
The phone has a dual camera setup on the back. It consists of a 20-megapixel telephoto lens and a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens. The rear camera supports Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), which allows you to capture better photos in low-light conditions. You can also take portrait mode photos with blurred backgrounds. The phone sports a 16-megapixel camera on the front.
OnePlus teases Android Oreo update for OnePlus 5
OnePlus has dropped hints that Android 8.0 Oreo update is coming to the OnePlus 5. The company had previously announced that OnePlus 5, 3T, and 3 would get the Oreo update by the end of this year. OnePlus tweeted a picture with the caption “You’ve heard of Elf on the Shelf, now get ready for.” The reference to ‘Elf on the Shelf’ indicates that the Oreo update will be rolled out around Christmas.

OnePlus has already been working on the Oreo-based OxygenOS for OnePlus 3 and 3T. It is expected to release the public beta build by the end of September after fixing all the bugs spotted in the closed beta builds. Interestingly, OnePlus is still using an older OnePlus 3 as its primary phone to test the new OS before OnePlus 5 or 3T.
