Obama is nothing short of a polarizing president so these numbers don’t come as a terrible shock, especially when you include the fact that land lines and cellphones were used for the survey. No word was given as to whether or not those polled also believe Obama to be responsible for the fact that they can no longer take their assault weapons into Target after the retailer banned them from their stores today. The survey was conducted June 24-30 with 1,446 registered voters on land lines and cellphones. The margin for error is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Rest of the worst and best

Not surprisingly, at least once you know that Obama was in first place (last place) with 33%, was the fact that George W. Bush is viewed as the second worst president with 28%. Nixon who vacated the presidency was only viewed as the worst by 13% by those polled with Jimmy Carter being the only other president who had more than 3% of the vote with 8%.

Ronald Reagan was viewed by 35% as being the best president in that time period with nearly double the votes that Bill Clinton received at 18%. That fact alone combined with Obama’s “triumph” over George W. Bush makes the sampling a bit contentious in the one opinion that I will share in a piece where I’m trying to avoid getting into politics.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

John F. Kennedy received 15% of the vote for best president, while Obama received 8% in that category despite the overwhelming contempt when asked for the worst.

Obama’s ratings after most recent election

With regards to the most recent elections, 45% of those surveyed believe that the U.S. would be in better shape had Mitt Romney won the last presidential election compared to 38% who feel that a Romney presidency would only have made things worse.

Due to events in Iraq and a slow growing economy among other reasons, Obama is at his lowest levels of popularity in recent weeks.

40% of those polled approve of the job Obama is doing with 53% in disapproval.
