Market & economic update
U.S. markets may open higher: U.S. stock index futures were marginally higher on Tuesday as investors were vigilant before the start of two day Federal Reserve policy meetings. Prior to this meeting, the Fed met in September where it took the market by surprise by continuing the bond buying program.
European markets up: European shares were up on Tuesday, maintaining the momentum. The banking sector performed badly due to legal cost issues which hampered Deutsche Bank and UBS. The FTSEurofirst 300 index was up 0.1% at 1,284.48 points at 0837 GMT.
Asian markets mixed: Hong Kong shares performed well on Tuesday, owing to cash poured in by China’s central bank into the country’s interbank market. The Hang Seng index climbed 0.2% to 22,846.5. The leading Chinese listings, China Enterprise Index increased 1.3% due to listing of Chinese banks. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.14%.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)
Yesterday afternoon, Apple reported that it earned $8.26 per share in the previous quarter, in comparison to $8.67 during the same quarter the last fiscal. Analysts projected $7.92 per share earnings. Revenue saw a jump of 4% to $37.5 billion as Apple sold 33.8 million iPhone units. Apple shares fell 3.2% in after-hours trading, but later recovered after CEO Tim Cook and executives shared more details.
Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF)
On late Monday, Herbalife reported adjusted earnings of $152.1 million or $1.41 per share for the third quarter. Analysts expected the nutrition company to earn $1.14 per share. The company increased the guidance for full fiscal, and shares climbed 0.8% in after hours trading.
United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X)
The shares of United States Steel Corporation on late Monday declined 1% after the company reported a loss (after adjustment of charges for the North America flat rolled and Texas operations), which was lower that the estimates. Sales of $4.13 billion could not beat the estimates of $4.32 billion.
LinkedIn Corp (NYSE:LNKD)
LinkedIn Corp is expected to earn 32 cents per share on revenue of $384.8 billion in the third quarter. The company will report quarterly results after the end of the trading session on Tuesday. The social micro-blogging company recently addressed the concerns of security experts regarding the LinkedIn intro service.
Blyth, Inc. (NYSE:BTH)
On Monday, shares of the Blyth rose 21.5% after the reports came that CVSL had offered $368 million to buy the company, as reported by Bloomberg. The buyout deal was pegged at $16.75. In after-hours trading the shares were trading at $15.50.
