Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) recently expanded Android apps to Chromebook. Earlier this year, the search giant announced plans to enhance Chromebook with fun and useful apps from Android at the I/O.

Chromebook starts out with two Android apps

Right now the selection is limited to just four apps including Evernote, Duolingo, Vine, and Slightwords. These apps will run under App Runtime for Chrome (Beta) which essentially is a virtual machine for the Chrome operating system. The new apps are available in the Chrome Store.

The Evernote app allows users to write and collect things that matter the most. The Chromebook version expands on the mobile version which is enhanced with a full-sized keyboard. Vine allows users to create unique short videos that loop. This video sharing app simplifies the entire social video experience. Duolingo offers a fun way to learn a new language and it’s free. Last but certainly not least, Sight Words is a smart app geared towards young kids and helps improve reading skills.

Google plans to unveil more Android apps for Chromebook

Earlier this summer, Sundar Pichai (Chrome and Android chief) unveiled the plan to launch Android applications on Chrome systems. The company would make it easy for developers to bring their apps to the Chrome platform with minimal engineering efforts. For now, the company is working separately with developers to get said apps running. We can expect Google to release more Android apps for Chrome in the next few months.

Currently the selection of apps for Chrome OS is very limited, it does have the right amount to get basic work done. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) clearly want to expand the Android empire and expanding it to their line of netbooks is just one way to achieve that goal.

For Chromebook owners, this is rather exciting news, especially if they use the device for everyday work and/or other activities.
