The Nintendo Switch’s biggest advantage is its ability to allow you to play games in your living room on a giant TV screen or on the go, whether it’s on a bus, at a park or any other location. However, one big concern if you are playing on the go is the battery. The battery life in the Switch is enough for most subway rides, but for longer commutes, you may face battery issues. This means you will have to charge it on the go if you wish to continue playing. If you don’t know how to charge the Nintendo Switch on the go, then keep reading.

How to charge the Nintendo Switch on the go

The best way to charge the Nintendo Switch on the go is to use portable power. You can even use a laptop to charge the Switch on the go. Although charging it via a laptop will be relatively slow, it will help you extend your game time.

One thing you should keep in mind when charging using a laptop is to power down the console. If the Switch is powered up, it will charge the laptop instead. You can also buy an extra battery pack, but remember to buy one that has a USB-C port.

Now that you know how to charge the Nintendo Switch on the go, you should also know that you can extend the battery life of the console by taking a few precautions. For example, the console’s battery will drain faster if the Joy-Cons are plugged into the sides of the Switch. Thus, it is recommended that you use the Joy-Cons in detached mode.

Turning down the screen’s brightness will also help boost the battery life. To do so, go to the Settings and then Screen Brightness. From here, you can adjust the display brightness. You can also enable the Auto-Brightness option as well.

You can also turn off the Wi-Fi and NFC (near-field communications) to save some battery. To do so, go to Settings and then turn on Airplane Mode. This will automatically disable the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC. However, to use the Joy-Cons in wireless mode, you will have to turn on the Bluetooth.

Another trick to prolong the battery life is to disable the vibration. The Nintendo Switch’s high definition vibration enhances the gaming experience, but it consumes a lot of power as well. To disable it, go to Settings and select Controllers and sensors and then turn off the vibration.

How to charge Switch in portable and console mode

Charging the Switch in portable mode is pretty simple. All you need to do is plug a USB-C cable into the USB port on the bottom of the Switch and keep playing. There should not be any issue, even if the Joy-Cons are attached to the console.

However, you may face some issue if you are playing games like Mario Kart 8. You may not be able to use the USB port on the bottom of the console if you are using the stand and the console is placed on a solid surface. To charge it in such a situation, you will have to place a few books around the console so that there is a space to connect the cable.

To charge the Joy-Cons if they run out of juice while playing in console mode at home, you will have to switch to portable mode as the Switch does not come with the ability to charge the Joy-Cons remotely. Thus, you will have to fit the Joy-Cons into the side of the console to charge them.

However, by doing so, you won’t be able to enjoy the experience of playing on a big screen. If you don’t want to sacrifice the playing experience and want to juice up the Joy-Cons, you will need to spend about $30 to buy a Joy-Con charging grip. It is similar to the grip that comes with the Switch, but it allows you to charge the Joy-Cons while you play. All you have to do is plug the grip into the console using a USB-C cable.

Charging the Switch in console mode while at home is the simplest of all and should not be an issue for anyone. The console will charge automatically whenever it is connected to the dock. To ensure the console is charging, just check the Switch’s display, which should be visible on the TV.

The battery icon on the top-left of the screen should tell exactly how much power the Switch has. It is important that you use the original adapter that came with the Switch as other adapters may not give proper voltage for efficient charging.
