The New York Police Department has confirmed that the bomb squad is investigating a suspicious package in Times Square. In addition to the bomb squad, officers are clearing the area around the Marriott Marquis Hotel.
As of 3 p.m., police were still “actively investigating” the package at 1535 Broadway, near West 45th Street, an NYPD spokesman told Patch.
The package was discovered at the same time that the U.S. Capitol and White House were on lock-down following a report of shots being fired. The incidents are likely unrelated but we will report on each story as more information becomes available.
Police have confirmed that package was no more than garbage, but goes to show how the world is on alert following recent terror attacks around the world.
“We’ve just been given the all-clear by the NYPD,” a spokeswoman for the Marriott Marquis told Patch.
