BlackBerry Ltd US Smartphone Share Fell Below 3 Percent

BlackBerry Ltd. (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) continues to lose subscribers in the United States, according to the latest survey released by comScore, a global digital measurement and analytics firm that provides insights regarding web, mobile, and TV consumers.

BlackBerry smartphone OS market share

Based on the results of the survey for the three months period that ended March 2014, the subscriber market share of BlackBerry Ltd. (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) in the United States declined 0.7% to 2.7%. Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) smartphone operating system—Windows Phone gained 0.2% to 3.3%.

The Android operating system of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) remained number one with 52.2% market share, an increase of 0.7% while the iOS operating system of Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) ranked second with 41.4%, down by 0.4% during the quarter.

During the first three months of this year, the survey shows that the Android and Windows Phone are gaining traction among users.

Smartphone OEM market share

The survey revealed that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) remained as the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States although its market share declined by 0.4% to 41.4%. Its closest rival, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005935) remained in the second spot with 27% market share. The South Korean electronics giant gained 0.9% market share during the quarter.

LG Electronics Inc. (KRX:006570) ranked third with 6.7% market share, up by 0.1% followed by Motorola with 6.4% market share and HTC Corp (TPE:2498) with 5.4% market share, both down by 0.3% during the period.

Top 10 mobile apps

During the period, the survey found that the mobile app of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is the number smartphone app. Facebook app accounts 75% of the total smartphone mobile media users (Android and iOS), 18 years old and above.

Google Play mobile app ranked second with 51.8% audience followed by Google Search mobile app with 49% share. YouTube ranked fourth with 48.8% audience.  The radio mobile app of Pandora Media Inc (NYSE:P) ranked fifth with 45.2% audience.

The other mobile apps of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) such as Google maps and Gmail have 42.5% market share while Yahoo Stocks ranked number 8th with 30.5% market share. Instagram and Yahoo Weather made it to the top ten with 28.1% and 27.6% audiences, respectively.

According to comScore, there were 166 million people who owned smartphones (68.*% mobile market penetration) in the United States as of March, an increase of 6% from the previous quarter.
