From transportation, shopping, and yes, even moving, the gig economy is taking over. Enabled by technology platforms that connect freelancers to clients, it is easier than ever to be your own boss.

These new platforms are pushing boundaries, and sometimes crossing them–as voters in Austin, TX proved when they voted against an ordinance that would have made it easier for ridesharing companies Uber and Lyft to operate. The two startups promptly left the city following the vote, for now.

But the gig economy is here to stay, and will continue to evolve, adapt and disrupt traditional industries. More than one-fifth of Americans provide services via the gig economy, and 42 percent have been a patron of on-demand services—and the sector is growing everyday:
