Research firm WalletHub published a report on March 30th that highlights the best and worst states for doctors to work in as of 2015. The report examines all 50 states and DC in terms of 12 key metrics (such as wages, work environment and number of physicians per capita) relating to employment and lifestyle for physicians.
Somewhat surprisingly, South Carolina turned out to be the best state for doctors to work this year, while Rhode Island was the worst.
Best states for doctors in 2015
As mentioned above, according to WalletHub, South Carolina is currently the best state in in the union to work in if you are a doctor. Breaking things down, the Palmetto State came in 8th place in the opportunity and competition category and third in the work environment category for first overall. Minnesota came in second place overall, with a 26th place rank in opportunity and competition and a first place finish in work environment. Texas was the third best state for doctors to work in 2015, coming in sixth in opportunity and competition and fifth in work environment. Another surprise was Mississippi in fourth place, finishing first in opportunity and competition and 22nd in work environment. Kansas rounded out the top five, with a third place finish in opportunity and competition and a ninth place finish in work environment.
Worst states for doctors in 2015
Maine came in 47th overall on WalletHub’s 2015 Best and Worst States for Doctors list, with an opportunity and competition rank of 43rd and a work environment rank of 48th. New York state was 48th on the list, 40th in opportunity/competition and 50th in work environment. Oregon was 49th in the rankings, with an opportunity and competition score of 51st, and a work environment score of 24th. New Jersey was in 50th place on the list, with an opportunity and competition rank of 50th and and a work environment rank of 31st. Rhode Island came in dead last (51st) on the list, ranked 49th in opportunity and competition, and 30th in work environment.
