Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s latest update for operating system update for Mac is now on 5.5 percent of Mac computers and that number is increasing fast. Advertising network Chitika reports that OS X Maverick has been downloaded three times as fast as last year’s OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion update within the first twenty-four hours.

Free Apple Mavericks OS X update

The main reason for the success is that this year’s software update is free. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) initially charged Mac owners $20 for the update last year. The tech giant charged even more for previous versions.

Chitka explained the details behind the matter: “To quantify initial OS X Mavericks adoption, Chitika Insights sampled millions of U.S. and Canadian Mac OS X-based online ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network. The data used within the analysis were drawn from impressions catalogued across the time frame of October 22 through October 23, 2013. For comparison, the 24-hour OS X Mountain Lion adoption data we catalogued last year is overlaid on the same graph. Pre-release OS X Mavericks exhibited low levels of usage due to beta-version activity from developers. 24 hours following Mavericks’ public release the afternoon of October 22, adoption rates hit 5.5% of all Mac OS X Web traffic. This significantly outpaces OS X Mountain Lion, which took approximately four days to reach the same level. While Mountain Lion wasn’t particularly expensive ($19.99), it’s likely the lack of a price tag on Mavericks spurred additional users to upgrade in the early going.”

Apple Mac users

For the last tally, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had about 72 million Mac users. Of course, that number could still be higher, especially since Apple reported that number back in June.

Even though Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s biggest sellers are iPhones and iPad tablets, the company’s Mac computers are still a strong product. Tech fans are still using laptops and desktops, so Maverick OS X is still a relevant product, which is great news for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).
