Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be planning to unveil the rumored iWatch alongside the iPhone 6 on Sept. 9, if this latest report from Re/code is correct. Previously, it was reported that Apple was planning to unveil two new iPhones on Sept. 9 and possibly the iWatch at a later event, perhaps in October.
iWatch to fully utilize HealthKit, HomeKit
Unsurprisingly, the iWatch will of course use HealthKit and HomeKit, two of the major new features Apple unveiled earlier this year at WWDC. HealthKit is the company’s new health and fitness API, while HomeKit is Apple’s API for controlling devices that are connected to the internet.
Of course it’s very unclear exactly how the iWatch will utilize these features, but it’s pretty easy to imagine some possibilities. Rumors about the device sporting numerous health-related sensors have been running hot and heavy for some time. In terms of HomeKit, the ideas have been less clear. Perhaps it’s the beginning of being able to flip on the lights by pressing a button on your watch. And there’s always the possibility that Apple will make it work with all of its devices, including the Apple TV. It would make sense, although this is mere speculation at this point.
Re/code’s John Paczkowski expects Apple to start sending out media invitations to the Sept. 9 event any day now.
When will the iWatch be available?
Even if Apple does show off the iWatch next to the iPhone 6 on Sept. 9, apparently it’s unclear exactly when it will be available for purchase. There have been rumors about problems with the manufacturing of the device’s display that could push back the release date. Earlier this month, it was reported that the iWatch might not come out until November.
Of course such reports haven’t affected past Apple products much. The company ended up launching the iPhone 5S on time in spite of early supply issues, and that came after rumors of manufacturing problems with the fingerprint scanner.
