We all lead busy lives and it’s easy to lose track of time. I myself am on a (working) vacation in a country that won’t be celebrating and completely lost track of the upcoming holiday this week. Certainly people in the industry are well aware of the closures, minus my little gaffe, but smaller casual investors, especially those overseas should be made aware of this week’s schedule and future closures.
This week’s schedule for stock market closure
This week will see a full day plus without trading in all major U.S. exchanges. On Thursday, the day prior to American Independence Day, the markets will close at 1PM EDT. Friday will see all stock markets fail to ring the trading bell and will be closed in their entirety.
The rest of the year
Following this week’s closures, the stock markets will have their longest stretch of the year without holidays and won’t close again until Monday, September 1st when they will be closed all day for the observance of Labor Day.
While Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day are observed in October and November respectively, neither federal holiday will affect trading and markets will remain open for business as usual.
Thursday, November 27th will see Americans and the markets celebrating Thanksgiving and will be closed all day. The Friday following (28th Nov.) the markets will close at 1PM EST.
In December, the markets will also close at 1PM EST on Christmas Eve, Wednesday the 24th while Christmas Day the 25th will see the stock markets shuttered completely. That is the last closure for 2014 with the markets open as per usual on New Year’s Eve the 31st of December but will not open on New Year’s Day, Thursday, Jan 1, 2015.
