While Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was only just now announced, it had been expected after a few key leaks. Here’s what we know thus far about the upcoming Ubisoft title.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Trailer
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the next entry in the incredibly popular action adventure RPG. Over the course of the series’ history, we’ve been taken everywhere from renaissance Italy to colonial America and ancient Egypt. The trip to ancient Greece with Odyssey marks the first time that we’ve seen the series take a trip to that country, and the past few Assassin’s Creed games have been set in areas other than the traditional Italian backdrop.
The reveal seemed to show an Assassin’s Creed Origins sequel, and came via a very short video that was posted on the official Ubisoft Twitter channel. It showcases a character kicking another character off a cliff, which could certainly be a reference to the Spartans kicking Persian messengers into the well, which was depicted in the film 300 and has gone down in history as a pretty famous scene.
We’ve included the tweet from Ubisoft below that should give you a sense of what you might be able to expect from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

There’s definitely a strong Greek theme in the artwork surrounding the logo, and while we don’t have a ton of information regarding the upcoming title we can get a general idea of the sort of vibe that the title will deliver. There’s even a Spartan-style helmet that adds to the Grecian theme. In a short flash in the video, however, the guy doing the kicking of the person into the well shows a sword sheathed with a snake head for a handle.
The snake head on the sword is significant because it represents the Order of the Ancients which eventually became the Order of the Templars. While the first thought may be that the kicker is some sort of Assassin or main character, it’s equally possible due to this information that it’s a Templar instead.
The prominent feature of a Templar character seems to suggest that they will be a playable option – likely alongside the assassin. It’s incredibly unlikely that an Assassin’s Creed game would feature solely a Templar and not an Assassin, but it’s definitely possible that there would be two different playable options – or perhaps swapping between the characters throughout the course of the game.
Without spoiling too much, it was pretty clear from the Assassin’s Creed Origins ending that the next game would be set in Greece, and there’s a certain character that became pretty prominent at the end of the game that we’re hoping that we will play as. However, they didn’t make an appearance in the trailer so any suggestion that we’ll see them as the protagonist is currently just pure speculation.
Until we see the official Assassin’s Creed Odyssey announcement at E3, we won’t have too much more information about the title outside of the trailer and rumors we’ve seen thus far, but we can certainly speculate about the sort of features and other gameplay aspects that we’ll see with the title once it finally releases.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Release Date
There’s no word on when the game will release yet, but it’s pretty likely that we’ll see the official release date announced at E3. Users around the web are suggesting that the game will be released in the “first/second quarter of 2019,” which would make sense given that Ubisoft released a major title at the same time this year – Far Cry 5.
Kotaku has quoted sources that state that the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey release date is in the Ubisoft Fiscal Year 2019 which ends on March 31, 2019, which suggests that we’ll see the title release sometime before that point.
When it comes out, however, there’s no doubt that it will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, as we’ve seen with the majority of recent titles.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Features And Gameplay
All of the information below comes from a leak posted on 4chan, so it’s important to take this information with a grain of salt, but it’s the best information we have thus far ahead of E3 (at which point we’ll get more word on whether or not the game will include any or all of these features)
“Takes place during the rise of Flavian Dynasty in Achaea, Macedonia, Trace and the Aegean Sea, but not Asia Minor (most of Modern Greece)
Rhodes will be in game, but Crete will be a DLC similar to THO [Assassin’s Creed Origins’ The Hidden Ones DLC]
Templars are families that control cities and the three provinces as Roman Clients and administer propaganda for the new Emperor
Can choose to play as male or female protagonist from Sparta
Major differences in the main story, targets, skills and customisation based on character chosen
Character story arcs do intersect and choice does not affect MD [modern day] outcome
Larger emphasis on MD [modern day]
Bayek/Aya not in game but play an important role in the story
Several cities play larger roles in the story, making the player return unlike in Origins
Largest cities are Sparta, Athens, Corinth, Delphi, Thessalonica, Phillippi
About same size map size of Origins with water
Like Assassin’s Creed Origins with more naval focus, about 30% naval
Social Stealth will return
More customisation options
Coming out first/second quarter 2019 like Far Cry 5 for emphasis on Splinter Cell Holiday 2018
Next game will take place in Rome possibly Japan after that
Judea under Herod was discussed but not pursued as a full game due to likely political/cultural backlash but Judea and the Sicarii will be a DLC similar to CotP [Origins’ Curse of the Pharaoh DLC]”
If all of this information is true, it would give us a strong sense of what is coming with the title. Keep in mind that this is unofficial information, however, and could be totally off base. It definitely seems like it could make sense given where the games have headed over the past few titles, but Ubisoft has been known to surprise in the past and we won’t have this many details confirmed even after E3.
