Capitalize For Kids’ Investor challenge combines students’ desire to do social good with career development

TORONTO, ON, November 9th, 2016 – There are two things well known about millennials; it’s hard for them to get jobs, and they care about giving back to the community. On November 1, Capitalize for Kids opened registration for its Student Challenge, which merges the desire to engage in effective networking and career building opportunities with the desire to do social good.

From January to April 2017, students from every province in Canada will compete in a portfolio management competition. The competition will serve as a catalyst for job opportunities post-graduation, as top performers will receive introductions to mentors at over 50 of North America’s premier financial services and consulting companies, along with access to resume screens and job interviews at over 10 of the most prestigious banks, pension plans, and hedge funds across North America. Students will also have the opportunity to see how they stack up against the best in the business, with investing elite such as Dan Dreyfus (Partner, 3G Capital) participating in a Master’s division of the Challenge.

“Students face the daunting challenge of balancing the demands of academics with other social priorities,” said Kyle MacDonald, Co-founder, Capitalize for Kids. “There is stiff competition in the job market and it is increasingly difficult to set yourself apart from other candidates. The Capitalize for Kids Student Challenge provides exposure to key contacts to students for future career opportunities while allowing them to give back to a cause they’re passionate about.”

As a generation with a heightened social consciousness, millennials understand the importance of engaging in meaningful philanthropic activities. Recently, there has been an increased social awareness around the issue of children’s and teen’s brain and mental health, which has driven a desire for students to get engaged and give back.

“We have created a platform for students to make a positive impact on children’s brain and mental health, while being able to advance their careers,” says Justin Scaini, Associate Director, Capitalize for Kids. “Combining career building efforts with a desire to achieve social change benefits everyone.”

Throughout the Challenge, students will raise pledges through the SickKids Peer-to-Peer platform to help solve the toughest challenges in children’s brain and mental health. All funds raised will go to the SickKids Foundation.
