iPhone 6S Release Date Set For Sept 11? Nope, Probably Not

Updated on

The iPhone 6S will probably be unveiled sometime this fall, although the exact date is unknown. Recently a Chinese blog reported that its sources claim the reveal date is Sept. 11, but as 9to5 Mac pointed out (and I concur), this date is highly unlikely.

Why the iPhone 6S won’t be unveiled on Sept. 11

The Chinese blog cited sources at Foxconn for the release date information. However, when it comes to new products, the iPhone in particular, Apple typically sets the keynote speech and unveiling on a Tuesday. Because Sept. 11 is a Friday, it’s highly unlikely that Apple will schedule the unveiling for that date.

And then there’s the fact that Sept. 11 is the anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks in the U.S. It’s also Patriot Day, a national day of mourning in memory of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the 2001 attacks. Apple certainly wouldn’t touch that date with a ten-foot pole.

When will the iPhone 6S be available to buy?

The Chinese blog also suggested that the iPhone 6S will go up for sale on Sept. 18, the week after the reported unveiling. Because Apple typically chooses a Friday to put new products up for sale, there’s a chance that the company will show off the iPhone 6S on Sept. 8. Apple tends to make the new iPhone available for purchase ten days after the unveiling. Last year the company unveiled the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on Sept. 9 and then put it up for sale on Sept. 19.

Of course these dates are purely speculations at this point. It’s probably too early to know when Apple will show off the iPhone 6S and make it available to purchase.

Expectations for the iPhone 6S

Along with rumors about the unveiling and release dates, there are plenty of rumors about the specs of the upcoming iPhone 6S. It’s expected that the casing of the handset will look pretty much the same as the iPhone 6, which shouldn’t be surprising because Apple usually saves exterior hardware redesigns for the numbered releases and focuses on internal specs in the S models.

The iPhone 6S is also expected to have a new chip from Qualcomm which could double the LTE speed of the device. Also 9to5 Mac reported last week that Apple will be using fewer and more efficient chips for the device. Two other rumors about the iPhone 6S which have persisted for some time are the addition of Force Touch to the display and an improved camera.
