The Checklist Manifesto is one of the best non-fiction books published in the last ten years, but, when I think about my rational and irrational moments, I wonder if Gawande overlooks a third category.
I’ve read several books on decision making. Now that I’m aware of my biases, I feel like I can decide better. And while I know of the nasty confirmation bias—and I fully believe the data—I can’t help but buy books and visit websites that confirm my imprecise beliefs. I am a case study in errors of consent: I make mistakes even when I know that I’m about to make a mistake.
I haven’t found a solution (has anyone?), but I discovered a helpful checklist in Michael Mauboussin’s Think Twice: Harnessing the Power of Counterintuition, a short and informative book written for “investors and businesspeople.” Do you want to improve your judgment?
