iPhone 6 To Be Incredibly Thin At Just 6 Millimeters

Updated on

The iPhone 6 may well be the slimmest smartphone in the world. According to the latest reports by South Korea’s ETNews, the iPhone 6 will be just 6 millimeters thick (Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) refers to thickness as depth). Currently, the Huawei Ascend P6 is considered to be the slimmest smartphone with just 6.18mm thickness.

iPhone 6 or iPhone Air?

Comparing the iPhone 6 to Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s previous versions, the iPhone 5S is 7.6mm thick while the iPhone 5C, which sports a colorful plastic casing, is 8.97mm thick. The iPhone 4S has a depth of 9.3mm. If sources are to be believed, the iPhone 6 will be less than half as thin as the iPhone 3GS, which has a depth of 12.3mm. Reducing the thickness by more than half in just a few years is a remarkable feat. However, some Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) fans and concept designers like Set Solution will still be disappointed because they have been expecting a 3mm iPhone 6.

ETNews referred to the iPhone 6 as the iPhone Air. But it’s too early to speculate over the name. Some of the Foxconn Technology Co. Ltd. (TPE:2354) employees recently told media that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is planning to launch the iPhone 6 in two sizes to take on the Android phablets. One version will have a 4.7-inch screen, while the other will be a true phablet with a 5.7-inch display.

iPhone 5S price may go down after iPhone 6 launch

Yesterday, we reported that the bigger version of the two may be launched in May, 2014. Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch model will stick to the September launch schedule. ETNews also said that the iPhone 5S prices will fall to $100 on-contract by May in the U.S. Recently, Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE:BBY) lowered the on-contract iPhone 5S price to $125 in a special promotion.

The same sources said that the iPhone 6 is expected to have a metal casing, but it will be slightly heavier that previous metals. A big Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) supplier recently announced the production of 3D curved Gorilla glass. Experts say this glass may be used in the iPhone 6. Other expected features of the iPhone 6 include a Lytro-style camera, a revamped A8 processor, improved iOS 8, a 13MP camera with professional shooting features, a full HD display, eye scanner and the motion sensor technology.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares jumped 0.20% to $545 at 9:30 AM EST on Tuesday.
