Google Inc (GOOG) Invests Millions Into More Solar Power Facilities

Updated on

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is continuing its investment into renewable energy. The search giant is doling out $80 million to pay for six additional solar facilities, according to The Next Web.

Where Google will be building

The company posted details on the new facilities on its blog today. The company said “the thrill” of investing into “this whole renewable energy” thing isn’t wearing off.

This new set of solar facilities will be Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s 14th investment. The search giant is partnering with KKR & Co. L.P. (NYSE:KKR), a global investment firm, and the six new facilities will go up in Arizona and California. They will be developed by Recurrent Energy and have a total combined capacity of 106 megawatts. The facilities will be able to generate enough electricity to power more than 17,000 homes in the U.S.

Google’s past sustainable energy investments

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) compared this new investment to one they made in 2011. The company teamed up with KKR & Co. L.P. (NYSE:KKR) again then and shelled out $94 million for four facilities which were also developed by Recurrent. The company says those facilities are up and running and now generating electricity. It also says it is committed more than a billion dollars to even more renewable energy projects around the globe.

Other sustainable energy products Google has invested in include a $75 million investment into a wind farm that’s located in Iowa and another $200 million it paid for a wind farm in Texas. The company has even invested in renewable energy projects in Africa, paying $12 million into a solar plant in South Africa.

Rumors about Google’s ships

Recently there was a rumor that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) was adding a couple of renewable energy facilities off the shores of the U.S. on two barges. Some theorized that facilities would be data centers powered by the movement of the waves. The company debunked those theories, however, and said the so-called mystery barges were actually going to be educational destinations for people who wanted to learn more about various kinds of technology.
