Google Reader has been shut down on July 1, and now many people have migrated to other RSS Readers of their choice. Feedly is the popular choice as an alternative to Google Reader, and it should be as it comes with a clean web interface, Chrome and Firefox extension and mobile apps for different platforms.
After migrating to Feedly, the first thing that you’ll need to do is to organize your subscriptions. Next, enjoy reading your favorite blogs and websites in its interface. But there’s one thing that you should definitely do if you’ve taken your lesson from Google Reader – never keep all your eggs in one basket. That’s why it makes sense to backup your feeds in Feedly, as there’s a way to export the subscriptions in OPML format. If in future Feedly too shuts down, then you’ll simply need to import the same file to another reader.
How to Export Feedly Subscriptions to OPML
Step 1: Login to Feedly and from the sidebar, click on Organize. On the Organize page, click on “As OPML” link. Alternatively, the same page can also be accessed from http://cloud.feedly.com/#opml.
Step 2: Next, you’ll be able to see all your subscriptions in OPML format. Copy the text starting from <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”utf-8″?> till the end as you can see in the below screenshot.
Step 3: Paste this text in your favorite text editor and save it with any name, but don’t forget to use .opml as the extension. An ideal name would be feedly.opml. This step being done, you’ve successfully exported your Feedly subscriptions!
Well, even though you’re not planning to move away from Feedly, it makes sense to take a backup of your RSS subscriptions, just in case.
