Somewhat late to the landscape of major social media players, Instagram was not launched until October 2010. However by the December the image-centric platform had already gained a million users and was well on its way to making a huge impact. In less than two years it was acquired by Facebook for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. This and many other fascinating facts about the network are covered in a new infographic by websitebuilder.org, which you can check out in full below.

Of course Instagram didn’t stop at just one million users. By 2016 it had a staggering 500 million, which is more than Twitter (but still behind social media king Facebook).  It is now one of the top social networks in the world, proving to be invaluable to individuals, celebrities, big brands and marketers alike.

In an interesting crossover, the most followed profile on Insta is that of singer and actress Selena Gomez (over 105 million), and her most liked photo is of herself drinking a coke! You can’t pay for advertising like that, or maybe you can?

Data reveals that there are more than 500,000 advertisers growing their businesses through the platform, and it is used by 48.8% of brands as a marketing tool. This number is expected to rise to 70.7% this year. It’s not surprising when half of all users follow at least one business and 5% will take actions like visiting a website or buying a product after being inspired by a well-crafted post.

Nike is currently the largest corporate brand on the network, with 68.1 million followers. Not far behind are National Geographic and Victoria’s Secret. The driver of their popularity comes from Instagram’s core function – sharing images. The public are enamoured by images of Nike’s footwear and other apparel, the wonderful sights of the world captured by National Geographic, and unsurprisingly the sexy women’s lingerie designed by Victoria’s Secret. For any brand or marketer to succeed, they need to focus on something visual. The data also reveals some best practises and demographics, such as being able to reach the most people on Wednesdays at 5pm. This is when user engagement (the number of likes and comments, divided by the user’s number of followers) is at its highest.

The social site skews towards a female demographic, with 31% of female internet users having Instagram accounts compared to 21% of men. 32% of all users have attended or attend college, and 30% earn between $50,000 and $74,999 a year.
