Uber Driver and GWR Member Urge To Vote Yes On Proposal 5

Today at 11AM PST Uber Driver and Gig Workers Rising member, Rondu Gantt will publicly call on investors to vote YES on a proposal (Proposal 5) submitted by The International Brotherhood of Teamsters General Fund that would force Uber to disclose more details about its lobbying efforts.

The proposal calls for transparent and accessible disclosure of Uber Technologies’ lobbying expenditures. This follows investigative reporting that exposed Uber as a funder of the Republican Attorneys General Association, who in turn funded groups that organized the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Uber lobbying efforts have also continued extensively against the PRO Act, as part of the corporation's post Prop 22 commitment to continue to “advocate” for Prop 22 like laws across the country.

A statement from Rondu can be found below.

If stakeholders continue to be kept in the dark as to how and where their money is spent, it can lead to unforeseen legal, reputational and financial risks. What we don’t know, can hurt us. Here in California, Uber spent tens of millions of dollars to exempt themselves from a law that would require them to provide their drivers with basic protections, afforded other workers-- drivers who personally take on physical and financial risks every day. In that campaign, Uber targeted drivers and customers through its app with messaging that was broadly seen as deceptive, and to many drivers felt like bullying. I’m a full time driver, and have been driving for Uber in the Bay Area for nearly 3 years. I feel Uber’s focus on political lobbying is a costly distraction from investing in their drivers, who are their biggest marketing tool, their most effective political advocates, and their main revenue generators. That is why I am urging shareholders to vote FOR Proposal 5.said Bay Area Uber Driver and Gig Workers Rising member, Rondu Gantt.
