The U.S. came within seconds of launching a nuclear strike on Russia and unleashing World War 3 during the coldest period of the Cold War, according to secret documents revealed by a historian.
Washington and Russia came extremely close to a massive nuclear war because of a faulty 46-cent component that caused a computer glitch, according to the documents. The secret documents were revealed and detailed in a book by American author Eric Schlosser titled Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety. The documents include over 1,000 accidents with nuclear weapons that occurred due to the negligence of American servicemen. In particular, the documents describe explosions, fires and accidental drops of nuclear bombs that could have cost millions of lives during the Cold War.
“It’s only since the Cold War ended that we’ve been able to find out how close we came, again and again, to having our own weapons detonate by accident, or potentially be stolen, or potentially be used by people without proper authorization,” Eric Schlosser wrote.
One incident that could have erased millions of lives from Earth took place at the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado in 1979. Defense officials were informed of a large-scale incoming attack from the Soviet side while computer screens showed images of the beginning of the imminent attack, prompting the officials to prepare to respond with nuclear weapons. Then a check-up of the backup radar took place, which allowed the officials to call off the retaliation nuclear strike seconds before it would have been launched, according to the documents.
2,200 Russian nuclear heading to U.S. shores
Another event that could have unleashed an-all out nuclear conflict on Earth described how U.S. warning systems detected an incoming attack from hundreds of missiles supposedly launched by Soviets. Zbigniew Brzezinski, the national security adviser of 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter, was woken up at 2:30 a.m. to be informed about the imminent nuclear war.
While warning systems showed a tremendous 2,200 Russia missiles heading toward U.S. shores, Brzezinski had only a few minutes to make a decision whether or not to launch a retaliation attack with the use of nuclear weapons. While making a call to Carter, Brzezinski received a call informing him that the missile alert was a false alarm caused by a faulty 46-cent component in the warning systems.
Such nuclear accidents can happen even today
In another incident, while navigating a B-52 bomber, American pilots accidentally dropped a plutonium bomb on North Carolina during their routine flight in 1962. After noticing a weight imbalance on the bomber, the pilot and the crew tried to come back to the airbase, but the aircraft began to break apart accidentally releasing the bomb.
At that time, all arming switches were activated except just one, which allowed the missile to hit the ground before a firing signal was sent, thus avoiding a massive nuclear explosion on U.S. territory. The Pentagon’s officially and openly revealed data describes only 32 incidents involving U.S. nuclear missiles, while Schlosser managed to obtain secret documents describing over 1,000 nuclear accidents between 1950 and 1968.
The author also points out that U.S.’s main nuclear bomber has not been replaced or modernized since the ‘60s, while the main land-based missile, which is still in the nuclear arsenal today, should have been replaced in the early ‘80s.
UFO saved Earth from nuclear war between Russia and U.S.
Meanwhile, the sixth man to walk on the Moon, American astronaut Edgar Mitchell, claims aliens saved Earth from a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia. Mitchell, 84, has said that U.S. military personnel spotted UFOs during arms testing in the ‘40s. The former NASA astronaut has been claiming aliens exist more and more frequently since he walked on the Moon in 1971.
Mitchell stated that aliens have always kept an eye on nuclear weapon testing in order to prevent the destruction of Earth due to a nuclear conflict between the U.S. and Russia. He also reminded readers of reports by American officers of frequently spotted UFO ships above Air Force bases during the entire 20th century. The astronaut also shared the story of one coastal servicemen about a missile that had been brought down by a UFO. Mitchell also believes aliens were at the places where Soviet nuclear missiles were stationed.
As for the credibility of Mitchell’s claims, Nick Pope, a former UFO researcher for the Ministry of Defense, said that even though he knows Mitchell as one of the most trustworthy people on Earth, all of his “facts” are based on stories from other people rather than his personal experience.
“Even where Mitchell’s sources are genuine, how do we know they have access to classified information about UFOs?” Pope asked in an interview with The Daily Mail.
Will aliens prevent a possible nuclear war between Russia and U.S.?
Meanwhile, the U.S. military is beefing up to prepare to counter Russia’s “hybrid warfare,” the outgoing U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno said during a press conference on Wednesday.
“In the last 18 months we have really started to train for what we call a hybrid warfare, which is what actually the war I consider Russia is in fact conducting… we are in the process of increasing our capabilities to do this,” Odierno said.
General Odierno also added that he considers Russia the “most dangerous” threat to the U.S. If these preparations to counter Russia lead to a nuclear confrontation between Washington and Moscow, will there be aliens around to prevent it?
