How To Check If Someone Opens OR View Your Email Message

Updated on

Gmail comes with plenty of features, and that’s why it is adopted by many users worldwide. Even if there’s something missing that you were trying to do, there are still ways to achieve it, all thanks to third-party browser extensions. For example, here’s an extension for Chrome named docTrackr that allows you to track or remotely delete Gmail attachments, or even set view, print and edit permissions to every PDF file that’s attached to Gmail. Let’s take a closer look at how it works.

How to use docTrackr

As you might have guessed, you’ll need to install the docTrackr extension from Chrome Web Store. When installed, you’ll be able to see a new button (the one with lock icon) added next to the regular attachment button in Gmail’s compose window. Click on this new button and then select a PDF file from your computer. Note that you’ll be able to select only a PDF and no other file format, as other formats are not supported at the moment.

Now, when you try to attach a file, you’ll be required to create an account with docTrackr. Your email address will be pre-filled, and all you’ll need to do is to enter a password. You’ll be creating an account with docTrackr and that’s why this password can be different from your Gmail one.

Once you do this, you’ll be able to see that the file is attached. It might take more time depending on the size of the file, but if the PDF is small, then it will only take seconds. Go ahead and click on the Send button.

Once you hit the Send button, you can now set the access rights to your attachment. docTrackr will present you with three choices: Can view, can print and can edit. There’s also an option for setting an expiration date, after which the recipient won’t be able to download your attachment. When you’re done, click on the “Secure and Share” button.

But that’s not all. You can track everything related to the attachments that you’ve sent using this method. You can view when the recipient last viewed your message, accessed or downloaded the file, analytics detail, location and more. This dashboard is visible once you send the message and hit the option to view it. There’s also an option to enable, disable or download the attachment.

Overall it can be said that this extension is very useful if you’re thinking to track and have complete control over your sent attachment, provided it’s a PDF.
