The main laboratory is based outside of Chicago. Still, thanks to its facilities spread across the country, it’s administering thousands of tests every day at schools, colleges, summer camps, nursing homes, churches, organizations, and community clinics. Besides testing Americans, the laboratory has also administered vaccine doses in Illinois. Thanks to its top-notch testing equipment, skilled technicians, and modern infrastructure, Northshore Clinical Labs can assist thousands of citizens daily in their journey handling coronavirus. In the present context, with the pandemic still affecting all life sectors, laboratories like Northshore must support public and private organizations and provide factual and prompt COVID-testing. Hirsh Kumar Mohindra, Director of Operations at Northshore Clinical Labs, has successfully managed all COVID-19 related activities to ensure that every patient, the Northshore Clinical Labs tests and shots with a vaccine dose receives the best possible treatment.
Northshore Clinical Labs’ Collaboration With Learn Charter
Northshore Clinical Labs has engaged in collaboration with Learn Charter School Network, an ingenious network that offers free tuition to elementary school students. The network includes ten schools located on the Southside, Westside, and Lake County. LEARN was founded in 2001 with the purpose to offer families the best services when it comes to tuition. The network describes itself as a child-centered organization that welcomes all families with the same warmth and hospitality and promotes academic commitment in an environment that encourages children to learn and grow. Learn Charter’s goal is to provide kids with the necessary academic ambition and foundation to get a college degree that allows them to build a high-quality life. Because all LEARN campuses strive to be safe environments for children and their families, the partnership with Northshore Clinical Labs has seemed the right decision because it allows LEARN to diagnose COVID-19 effectively and prevent virus spread. The two organizations have started collaborating since March and plan to continue their partnership in offering accurate testing for the next academic year, through May.
Hirsh Kumar Mohindra, Director of Operations at Northshore Clinical Labs, stated that he put into motion a team of over a dozen experts to join LEARN staff in testing children. Northshore staff is moving from room to room at each school to test the children. The laboratory is aware of the challenges nurses experience trying to test elementary school children and is ready to assist them in their efforts by making the testing environment as comfortable and welcoming as possible. Northshore Clinical stepped in to support LEARN Chicago when it failed to find a local lab to provide comprehensive COVID testing services. The laboratory offers the White Glove Service to Learn Center, where Northshore Clinical experts come on-site fully equipped in PPE gears to collect testing samples from the children. It then emails the results back to the LEARN center, patient, and head of security. The White Glove Service also collects demographics alongside the specimen for testing to keep an eye on the evolution of the virus.
Northshore Clinical has performed extensive coronavirus testing for underprivileged children in general during the pandemic, so they had no second thoughts when LEARN asked for the laboratory to extend their efforts into supporting its network. Besides testing and vaccinating in campuses, Northshore Clinical Labs also held clinics for Learn Charter during the summer. The children and staff from LEARN love Northshore staff which became part of the family during the testing and vaccination campaigns they deployed together. The two organizations are more than proud to state that they have built a flourishing partnership and are thrilled to continue their work together.
COVID-19 Testing
On the network’s official website, learncahrter.org we find out that Northshore is testing at all their campuses (Romano Butler, Charles and Dorothy Campbell, Herro Family, Excel, 7 Elementary School, 8 Middle School South Chicago, Hunter Perkins, Pre-K, etc). In addition to the Chicago Campuses, the laboratory is also supporting LEARN’s testing efforts in Washington DC. Both organizations made over 200,000 tests until now under the supervision of the Head Nurse for Learn Charter, Markuail Griggs. Mrs Griggs stated that “LEARN students have high expectations from us, and we manage to meet their standards by working with Northshore to test them in safety conditions and protect them from this treacherous virus.”
The Northshore laboratory basically sends technicians on LEARN’s sites to test children and support their medical staff. Northshore is offering three kinds of coronavirus services, asymptomatic testing (weekly testing service), symptomatic testing (conducted whenever the children experience flu-like symptoms), and quarantine testing (when kids are suspected to have caught the virus or have been exposed to it). The testing plan was designed by Northshore Lab and Learn Charter with the purpose of preventing children from quarantining for 10 days unnecessarily. The Northshore technicians come on campus each week, but if one of the children shows symptoms a couple of days later, the nurses collect the sample, and the laboratory sends a courier to pick up the specimen. The couriers go from the main laboratory to any campus, no matter how far away it’s located.
The kind of support Northshore offers to its partners is invaluable because not many laboratories would put the work and effort to drive long distances only to pick up a kid’s specimen for testing.
