Statement On Republicans’ Infrastructure Negotiations

(Washington, DC) Today, the Always Essential campaign released the following statement in response to Senate Republicans’ counteroffer to President Biden’s infrastructure plan.

“The Republican counter proposal is nothing short of robbing from the poor to pay the rich. Their attempt to take away COVID-19 relief from working people to fund their infrastructure plan is the latest in a series of moves by Republicans to avoid making corporations and the rich pay their share of taxes. It comes directly at the expense of those essential workers still reeling from the pandemic like caregivers, farmworkers, grocery store clerks, nurses and hospital staff, delivery drivers, and warehouse workers that put their lives on the line to serve the public.

“The relief money included in previous COVID-19 legislation was meant to keep essential workers on the job and help states rebuild their economies. We are already seeing Governors, both Republican and Democrat, trying to skirt the rules and use that money to pay back big bank loans rather than keep essential workers in jobs. We cannot afford to let Senate Republicans force essential workers to the unemployment lines rather than in good-paying jobs that will help our country build back better.”

About Always Essential

Always Essential is a campaign of working people, activists, and organizations joining together to transform what’s possible for essential workers — especially those in low-wage sectors who  are disproportionately Black and other workers of color. We are working in cities, counties, states, and at the federal level to put essential workers first and build the lasting change  we want to see.
