Delaware Stimulus Check: Residents Can Expect $300 by May 31

Published on

Several states and counties are sending stimulus checks to residents to help them offset the rising cost of living, inflation and prices of goods. Delaware is the latest state to do so, and the Delaware stimulus check could provide eligible residents with a one-time payment of $300. The first round of checks will go out at the end of this month.

Delaware Stimulus Check: Who Will Get It?

In April, Governor John Carney approved the 2022 Delaware Relief Rebate Program. Under the program, residents who filed a 2020 Delaware state income tax return will get a one-time $300 stimulus check. Married couples who file their return jointly will get a stimulus check of $600.

“The program was developed in consideration of the economic hardships experienced by Delaware families as they emerge from a two-year pandemic and face generationally high grocery and energy costs,” the program’s website says.

Residents don't need to be an adult to qualify for the Delaware stimulus check. This means those who filed a 2020 Delaware personal income tax return by the due date, including extensions, will qualify for the Delaware stimulus check whether or not they were claimed as a dependent by anyone.

Deceased family members, however, will not get the stimulus money. Those who have died since filing their 2020 tax return will not qualify for the 2022 Delaware Relief Rebate, according to the program’s website.

Those who filed their 2020 income tax returns will be the first to get the Delaware stimulus check, and they will get the payment automatically. The Division of Revenue will automatically identify the residents who filed their 2020 return, as well as issue the checks to them.

Those who filed as a 2020 resident but are no longer a resident will not be eligible for the 2022 Delaware Relief Rebate.

“If you filed a resident return as a part-year resident and moved on or before December 31, 2020, you are not eligible to receive a 2022 Delaware Relief Rebate,” the website says.

2022 Delaware Relief Rebate Program: Non-Filers May Also Qualify

Non-filers will also get the money, but they may have to claim it. As per the program’s website, the authorities will come up with a plan for non-filers to claim the stimulus check. The plan is expected to be developed by October.

“The Department of Finance will develop a pathway for qualifying adult Delaware residents who did not file a 2020 Delaware tax return to receive a rebate. Additional information will be announced as it is [sic] becomes available,” the program’s website says.

Separately, those who filed a 2020 Delaware resident personal income tax return, but do not get the stimulus checks three weeks after the date it was issued, need to contact the authorities at [email protected] or call 302-577-8200. The first round of checks will go out in May, and the program’s website will be constantly updated with the issuance dates of the checks.
