Colin Giles, former senior vice president of sales at Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) joined Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd (SHE:002502) as executive vice president of the company’s consumer business group.

According to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd (SHE:002502), the appointment of Giles was effective yesterday, July 1. Giles will supervise the marketing, retail, and open channel development of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer worldwide.

New Exec Experienced in Chinese Markets

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd (SHE:002502) emphasized that Giles has significant experience as a senior executive in the handset industry. The company said the former executive of Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) has a unique blend of global perspective and expertise with deep experience in the Chinese market.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer added that his proven expertise in the handset industry, particularly in the field of sales and marketing as well as channel development, will strengthen its consumer business, and boost its momentum in making Huawei a leading brand in the smartphone industry.

In a statement, Richard Yu, chief executive officer of consumer business group at Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd (SHE:002502), said that Giles achieved phenomenal success in his previous roles in the industry. Yu expressed confidence that Giles will be instrumental in propelling the growth of the company’s marketing efforts to become one of the top consumer brands worldwide.

On the other hand, Giles expressed excitement about working with the company in developing its consumer brand. He noted that Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd (SHE:002502) managed to make big strides in the global market place with its flagship products such as the Ascend P6, the world’s slimmest smartphone.

Huawei Seeks ‘Synergy’ With Nokia

The Huawei Ascend P6 is powered by the Android operating system and it is only 6.18mm thin. It is integrated with a 1.5Ghz quad core processor, a 4.7-inch high definition display, outstanding camera, and the latest intuitive Emotion UI.

Last month, Yu stated that Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd (SHE:002502) is open-minded about the idea of acquiring Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) because he believes that the combined companies have some synergies. After Yu’s statement, the company immediately clarified that there is no acquisition plan on the table or in the foreseeable future.
