Nintendo shares tumbled in Tokyo after Super Mario Run failed to garner rave reviews. The stock dipped 7.1% on Monday, bringing the total drop to around 11% since the debut of the game last week, according to Bloomberg.
Has Nintendo made it too costly?
DeNA Co, which collaborated with Nintendo on the game, also dropped 14% in the same period. Super Mario Run was supposed to be a decisive moment for Nintendo, which made its full-fledged entry into the mobile gaming arena with this game.
The review rating by 50,000 players of the game on Apple’s App Store has been 0.5 stars out of five, with an average rating of two. This is the lowest for apps in the download ranking and lags other popular games such as Clash Royale and Candy Crush Saga, notes Bloomberg.
Nintendo also took flak over the cost of the game, which is free to download and play for the first three levels but costs $10 for the full version. Fans are not happy that they need to pay for the World Tour Story mode. Others say that the unlocked levels are so easy that they do not induce them to buy more. However, the game seems to be unaffected by the ratings, as it is already the top downloaded game on the U.S. App Store.
Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Ace Research Institute, stated that investors’ expectations for the game were very strong.
“There are a lot of people writing on the App Store that Super Mario Run isn’t very fun. Perhaps expectations were too high,” the analyst noted.
Android users have to wait until 2017
While Super Mario Run is only available on iOS, Android users are wondering when the game will debut on Android. Nintendo did give some hint at the release, but it is not going to be before Christmas. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime stated that the game will be available on Android in 2017.
“In order to develop the game and make it as special, we had to focus on one platform and we decided to focus on iOS, iPhone, [and] iPad,” he said previously.
Super Mario Run is about the iconic mustached plumber running across a scrolling landscape to save Princess Peach. The success or failure of this game should make it somewhat clear what the Japanese game maker can achieve when it comes to the mobile app market.
Nintendo proved that it can shine in the mobile gaming field when Pokemon Go was released. But Nintendo played only a part in its creation. Super Mario Run, on the other hand, was developed entirely by Nintendo with assistance from DeNA. Investors and shareholders have been expecting a lot from the company since its announced foray into mobile apps in March 2015.
