WHY: Lumber Liquidators is the largest hardwood flooring retailer in the United States. In October 2015, the company pleaded guilty to violations of the U.S. Lacey Act, which was amended in 2008 to include a prohibition on trade in illegally sourced and traded plant products. This is the first time that a major U.S. corporation has been found guilty of a criminal felony for smuggling wood, related to violations of the U.S. Lacey Act.
Prior to this sentencing, Lumber Liquidators has requested a five-year probation sentence under the conditions that it (1) not commit another federal, state, or local crime during the probation term; (2) implement an Environmental Compliance Plan; and (3) during the first four years, engage an outside accounting and/or environmental consulting firm to conduct three audits of its Lacey Act compliance.
