Ed Hyman: U.S. Only Half-Way Through Recession Recovery

Tonight, they discuss the state of the U.S. economy and markets in 2016. Here’s a preview:

Consuelo Mack: “But half-way through the recovery, seven years in — is this going to be a record-breaker?”

Ed Hyman: “It’ll be a record-breaker, because it’s already been a record-breaker. It went down the most, it’s been slow the most. And for example, once the Fed tightens — and they’ve just tightened — that’s a critical event. All sorts of things are coming in to tell you, ‘Now’s the time,’ and they did it, a few weeks ago. And when they do that, on average, a recession is five years out…the shortest would be three, the longest would be seven…Everything is slow motion in this one. Count to three; this one would be count to 300, then you’re more in pace with this slow and steady expansion.”

Consuelo Mack: “So Dennis, Ed just mentioned the Fed, a critical move, and one of the things that you have concerns about in the U.S. economy is that we are coming to the end of this extreme easing cycle here in the U.S. So how concerned are you about the health of the U.S. economy and the longevity of the recovery?”

Dennis Stattman: “My concern is a simple one…that the economy, and especially asset prices, have benefited so much from very low interest rates, very easy money and the Fed buying a lot of assets, which has poured money into the asset markets, that seems to be over. And that was a great tonic while we had it. I’m hoping we’re not total addicts, but if you look at the U.S. stock market there has not been a lot of progress on the upside since the Fed ended QE, and I’m just concerned that the absence of that aggressive ease and that aggressive money creation could be tough on the asset markets.”
