Samsung Gear S2 Smartwatch Debuts Ahead Of IFA

Samsung debuted the Gear 2 Smartwatch just days before the upcoming IFA Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin. Last week, the South Korean tech giant showed a teaser when lead designer Dennis Miloseski posted an image of himself wearing the device as part of the “test drive.” Samsung confirmed that the Gear S line includes the Gear S2, which features a minimalist modern design, and the Gear S2 Classic, which of course looks more like a traditional watch.

Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch features and specs

Both new watches feature a rotating bezel complete with “home” and “back” buttons which make for easier access to applications and notifications. The Gear S2 measures 11.4 millimeters thick and has a 1.2 inch circular screen with 360 x 360 (or 302 ppi) resolution. The smartwatch’s battery life is supposed to last two to three days. It also features wireless charging capabilities.

The Gear 2S’s internal specs include a 1.0GHz dual-core processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and various sensors, including a heart rate monitor.

Samsung Gear S2 to compete with Apple Watch

Samsung has been making smartwatches for two years already, but the new S2 is more of a challenger to the Apple Watch. Unlike the previous wearables like the Galaxy Gear, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit, the new watch will feature the Tizen operating system instead of Android. Tizen is based on Linux kernel and GNU C with the implementation of Linux API. It is already used in many devices, including mobile phones, tablets, personal computers and smart televisions.

Thanks to the growing interest in mobile payments, the Samsung Gear S2 will come with an NFC chip. As many mobile phones and smartwatches now come with NFC capabilities for mobile payments, it would be strange for it not to offer some sort of payment system. And since device customization is a nice extra to add, the tech company said it plans to offer customers a choice of watch bands and faces which can be clicked into place.

As of this writing, Samsung has yet to announce the price or availability of the Gear S2 smartwatch.
