Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced the all new version of its mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, on Wednesday. The operating system features some drastic changes when compared to older versions of Android. It features a redesigned user interface known as the Material Design, along with other improvements in performance and improved battery life. At first this new operating system will only be available in just announced Nexus 6 smartphone, Nexus player and the Nexus 9 tablet. The new OS will be made available as an upgrade for many other Android phones in the near future. However, as with the launch of any new mobile OS, people want to know which devices will be getting the new Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

It’s up to manufacturers and carriers to develop update for all new operating systems, but some manufacturers focus on releasing new devices instead of updating old ones so it might take a while in a few cases. The good news is that Nexus devices have always the first in line to receive new OS updates, and it’s reassuring to know that Google values its existing customers.
List of Nexus devices getting Android 5.0 update
Of note, not all Nexus devices will be getting this new update. Google clearly specified which Nexus devices will be getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop in a blog post. Here’s the complete list:
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 7 (2012)
- Nexus 7 (2013)
- Nexus 10
Google also said that Google Play edition devices will be getting the new update asap. However, Nexus devices will be the first to get the update, and then the Google Play edition devices.
Older Nexus devices such as the Nexus One, Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus will not be getting Android 5.0. In fact, the Nexus Galaxy was dropped off from Google’s list of eligible devices to receive Android updates a year ago.
