Nexus 6 Arriving Mid-October, To Be Named Nexus X

Updated on

After the launch of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the rumor mill has turned its focus on Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s forthcoming Nexus 6 smartphone. A new report from Android Authority claims that Google will launch the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet on October 15 or 16. Citing two sources familiar with the Internet giant’s plans, the website said “a new software initiative” will debut on November 1.

Android L coming on November 1?

It clearly hints at the final release of Android L, which could be made officially available on November 1. Android Authority is unclear whether Google will start shipping Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 on Nov.1 loaded with Android L, or it would roll out the new OS after Nexus 6 has hit the stores. A few days ago, reports surfaced that HTC will manufacture Nexus 9 tablet for Google. Many HTC engineers have flown to Google headquarters in the last few months to work on the tablet.

However, Nexus 6 smartphone will be manufactured by Motorola, the Business Google sold to Lenovo Group Ltd. (OTCPINK:LNVGY) (HKG:0992) earlier this year. Previously, there were reports that the Mountain View-based company was planning a secret event to launch Nexus 6 on Halloween, Oct.31. The smartphone was last month spotted in India, where it was shipped for demo purposes.

Nexus 6 may be named Nexus X

Android Authority added that Nexus 6 may be named Nexus X upon launch. That’s because Google doesn’t own copyrights to the name Nexus 6, family of novelist Philip K Dick does. That’s in line with a product page spotted on Best Buy’s website, showing its name as Nexus X with a price tag of $499.99. Nexus 6 will reportedly get WiFi calling feature on T-Mobile. The telecom operator is working to offer infrastructure for the feature.

Purported features of Nexus 6 include 5.2-inch Quad HD screen with 1440×2560 resolution, 3GB RAM, 13-megapixel main camera, 2.1-megapixel front snapper, quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 2.7GHz clock speed, and Adreno 420 GPU.
